Extension Care
WASHING
Before washing, thoroughly brush hair to remove any tangles. We want to avoid matting , so never rub the ends of the hair together while washing. Gently wash your extensions (squish like your applying dish soap to a sponge) with sulfate-free and paraben-free shampoo. Do not be afraid to give your scalp a good scrub, it is important to give your scalp some TLC. Repeat as needed, then add conditioner and leave in for 1-5 minutes. Be sure to completely rinse away shampoo and conditioner as to avoid product build up on your hair and scalp.
DRYING
Remember to always be gentle with your extensions. Don’t go whipping your wet hair back and forth like you're living your best Rock Band life, instead blot and squeeze the excess water in a towel and use a detangling brush or comb to comb through your extensions and apply your styling products. Air drying is fine, however we find that most of our recommended products work best with a blow dry style as most styling products are heat activated.
STYLING
Hand Tied Hair can be styled using a blow dryer, flat iron, or curling iron. Always apply professional recommended styling products to protect your hair extensions before any heat styling is performed. I recommend a style heat no higher than 350°F.
PRODUCTS
Let’s face it, not all products are extension compatible. Like I mentioned before use only sulfate-free and paraben-free products. Investing in salon quality products is going to prolong the life of your extensions. I do recommend you get these products directly from the salon or by shopping our must have products here. Avoid products containing alcohol, oil, ethanol or sunscreen. These ingredients can leave your hair dry, frizzy and can cause discoloration. We don’t want none of that.
SLEEPING
A braid is going to be your bestie when it comes to sleeping with extensions. Make sure to brush your hair thoroughly, apply a serum from mids to ends and braid. This is going to help avoid matting while sleeping. Never go to sleep with wet hair.
Bonus Tip: A silk or satin pillow case is good for your hair + skin. This causes less friction. Less friction = less frizz.
SWIMMING
Who doesn’t love a good dip in a pool, lake or ocean? Extensions not so much, but this doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy living your best life. Prep your hair by wetting it with clean water before taking a dip. Apply a leave-in conditioner and comb through. Immediately rinse hair with clean water.
Bonus Tip: Wash your hair with a gentle clarifying shampoo after water activities to remove all impurities that may cause damage to the hair and apply hair mask to moisturize.
WORKING OUT
If you are wearing a lot of hair, we recommend pigtail braids when working out. This helps distribute and balance the weight of the extensions + it is super cute. A ponytail works too.
